Nesting aids need to be cared for
Wild bees handle the cleaning of old nesting passages very differently.
Mason bees in spring tend to be lazy to clean and prefer to get new tubes or holes. The reeds are covered with cocoon after 2-3 years and debris from partition walls, dead bee larvae, pollen debris and parasites Trashed and unusable.
Scissor bees and holey bees in summer, on the other hand, are real cleaning devils. They meticulously clean out all residues and relocate the holes every year.
Sometimes this creates real mountains of rubbish.
Nesting aids are artificially created breeding opportunities that wild bees do not find in nature. That's why you have to take care of your new roommates. For example, I recommend replacing the tubes every 2-3 years.
But now individual cocoons could still be stuck in the tubes. What to do?
Slip out of the black box
- Place the filled tubes in a cardboard box
- Close the box so that it is light-tight
- Cut a loophole (7-8mm)
- Loophole turned away from the light in
put a nest box
Open the reeds
You carefully open the old reeds and remove the remaining ones
Cocoons. This is cleaned of debris and excrement from the bee larvae, etc., and placed in a small box with loopholes (for me there are drawers).

Slip into a drawer
The bees hatch in the box, leave it through the holes and look for a suitable nesting tube.
Nistbrettchen
